In order to achieve these goals and promote a global approach to the ecological transition, GAIN looks at innovative ways of producing fish and shelfish, and seeks integration with other sectors. Being a real paradigm shift, eco-intensification of European aquaculture is a transdisciplinary challenge that requires the integration os scientific and technical innovations, new policies and economicinstruments, as well as the mitigation of social costraints. Successful eco-intensification of aquaculture will set the scene for the ecological transition of EU and EEA aquaculture, increasing the production of higher quality aquatic products, creating more jobs and improving the trade balance by reducing import.
The GAIN Consortium includes a wide range of complementary expertise and a well-blended mix of research institutes and industrial partners, which are cooperating to:
→ test novel sustainable feeds, designed to improve productivity without increasing the pressure on land and fish stocks;
→ develop new circular processes, which turn both by-products and side streams into valuable secondary materials, thus increasing profits and minimizing the environmental footprint;
→ foster the digitalization of aquafarming, by developing tools for the implementation of Precision Aquaculture in fish and shellfish farms;
→ introduce a new approach to the sustainability assessment of aquafarming, based on a comprehensive index, including environmental, socio-economic and welfare indicators;
→ identify legal barriers restricting the implementation of circular processes and suggest policy changes for supporting the growth of EU-EEA aquaculture.

More info: www.unive.it/gainh2020_eu

The contributing project Cities2030 – Co-creating resIlient and susTaInable food systEms towardS FOOD2030 (October 2020 September 2024) is another EU Horizon 2020 Project implemented by a network of 41 EU and extra-EU partners, with overall coordination of Ca’ Foscari University, Department of Economy.

Urban food systems and ecosystems (UFSE) demand immediate action. Cities2030 commit to work towards the transformation and restructuring of the way systems produce, transport and supply, recycle and reuse food in the 21st century.

Cities2030 vision is to connect short food supply chains, gathering cities and regions, consumers, strategic and complement industry partners, the civil society, promising start-ups and enterprises, innovators and visionary thinkers, leading universities and research across the vast diversity of disciplines addressing UFSE, including food science, social science and big data.

Cities2030 actively encourage the participation of citizens by delivering a trusted UFSE, moving consumers from being passive recipients to active engagement and motivated change agents. This objective is achieved via multiple tools delivered by Cities2030 such as the CRFS Alliance, a community of practice supported by a digital platform, reaching all over Europe and beyond. This approach will enable policy developments, innovation actions within result-driven Labs, and enhancements on a pan-European scope with a global reach. Cities and regions will improve resilience and sustainability, and their leadership will create short food supply chain and ecosystems enabling local investments, trans-borders and transnational deployment.

A blockchain-based data-driven UFSE management platform will secure intelligence and coordination actions by delivering an accurate, almost real-time digital twin of the whole supply chain, e.g. from production to waste management, but also on key enablers of resilience and sustainability.

More info: https://cities2030.eu/

Contacts

Event Secretariat: h2020gain.school@gmail.com

[qode_elements_holder number_of_columns=”four_columns” switch_to_one_column=”768″][qode_elements_holder_item vertical_alignment=”top” advanced_animations=”no” item_padding=”10px”]

GAIN – Green Aquaculture
Intensification in Europe

www.unive.it/gainh2020.eu

https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/773330

Department of
Environmental Sciences,
Informatics and Statistics (DAIS)

Scientific Campus,

via Torino 155, 30170
Venezia Mestre, Italy

[/qode_elements_holder_item][qode_elements_holder_item vertical_alignment=”top” advanced_animations=”no” item_padding=”10px”]

GAIN management team

Roberto Pastres, scientific coordinator

Chiara Licata, project manager

Phone +39 041 234 8674

gain2020@unive.it
GAIN blog

[/qode_elements_holder_item][qode_elements_holder_item vertical_alignment=”top” advanced_animations=”no” item_padding=”10px”][/qode_elements_holder_item][qode_elements_holder_item vertical_alignment=”top” advanced_animations=”no” item_padding=”10px”]

This event receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 773330 (GAIN, Green Aquaculture Intensification in Europe).
The content of this website does not reflect the official opinion of the European Union.
