When it comes to sustainability, freshwater is one of the most valuable natural resources to protect. The water footprint is an indicator that helps us understand how much of this resource is used not only through direct household activities, such as showering, washing and cooking, but also indirectly through the production of food, products and services.
This indicator therefore allows individuals and families to become more aware of the environmental impact associated with their everyday choices.
For this reason, the European LIFE Svolta Blu project has developed a footprint calculator specifically designed for households. Through a series of simple and intuitive questions about lifestyle, purchasing habits and domestic consumption, the tool provides an estimate of a family’s overall impact.
The results also offer useful guidance on where waste can be reduced and which more sustainable habits can be introduced into daily life.

Using the calculator means becoming aware of your consumption and making small, concrete changes to protect a fundamental resource like water.

The main objective of the LIFE Svolta Blu project is to promote the sustainable management of water resources through an innovative blue credit system. This approach rewards companies and citizens that reduce consumption or invest in conservation measures, creating a local market for the exchange of these credits.
The calculator was developed as part of the project’s environmental education activities, with the aim of increasing consumer awareness and encouraging families to reduce their domestic impact. The long-term objective is to support a balance between resource use and natural regeneration, safeguarding availability for future generations.
