LIFE 2026 Calls: European Opportunities for the Environment, Climate, and Land

The LIFE 2026 Programme is the European Union’s main financial instrument dedicated to the environment, climate action, and the energy transition. Active since 1992, LIFE finances concrete projects capable of generating measurable impacts on the local environment, supporting the implementation of European policies on biodiversity, the circular economy, climate adaptation, and clean energy.

For the 2021-2027 period, the LIFE Programme has a total budget of approximately €5.4 billion and is managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure, and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).

On April 21, 2026, the new LIFE 2026 calls for proposals were officially published on the European Funding & Tenders portal, ushering in a new era of opportunities for public bodies, businesses, universities, protected area managers, associations, and environmental protection stakeholders.

Municipalities, provinces, regions, park authorities, consortia, and land managers find the LIFE Program a particularly suitable tool for transforming local needs into European-funded projects.

Among the most relevant topics for local authorities are:

  • prevention of hydrogeological instability and adaptation to climate change;
  • renaturalization of degraded areas, biodiversity protection, and sustainable land management.

Additionally, there are interventions on air quality, water management, waste reduction, the circular economy, energy efficiency of public buildings, and citizen involvement in ecological transition processes.

LIFE funds pilot, demonstration, and best-practice projects, with a strong focus on the replicability of results and the ability to produce concrete benefits in the medium to long term.

The 2026 calls for proposals also divided the program into four main axes:

  • Nature and Biodiversity – protection of habitats, species, ecosystems, and ecological networks;
  • Circular Economy and Quality of Life – waste, water, air, soil, circular economy;
  • Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation – climate resilience, emissions reduction, risk management;
  • Clean Energy Transition – energy efficiency, energy communities, capacity building.

Recently published calls have confirmed a strong European focus on regional resilience and the ability of local authorities to address new environmental challenges. In particular, the themes of natural resource management, urban and rural climate adaptation, ecological restoration, and accelerating the energy transition are central.

As it does every year, CINEA also organized the EU LIFE Info Days 2026, from April 28th to 30th, to illustrate priorities, evaluation criteria, and application procedures for the new calls.

In addition to the financial contribution, participating in LIFE means joining European cooperation networks, developing internal expertise, and experimenting with innovative solutions with strong institutional visibility.

For many local governments, it also represents a concrete opportunity to finance interventions that would otherwise be difficult to cover through ordinary budgets, while also enhancing environmental strategies already included in territorial plans.

The European Project Planning sector of EPC supports public bodies and organizations throughout all phases of the LIFE process: project idea analysis, eligibility assessment, partnership building, technical proposal drafting, budgeting, governance, communication, and administrative-financial management.

In a European context increasingly focused on sustainability and climate resilience, the LIFE Program continues to represent one of the most concrete opportunities for transforming local needs into funded projects and tangible results.
