Upcoming EnCLOD Project Study Visit to Debrecen

As preparations continue for the upcoming second EnCLOD Project study visit in Debrecen, here are the main highlights from the demonstration video recorded during the previous visit to Žilina, Slovakia.

In the video, David Barta from City One, the project’s technical partner, explains the practical steps and objectives involved in installing low-cost sensor networks for collecting Open Data and IoT data. These technologies are designed to optimise traffic flows, air quality monitoring and road safety.

The EnCLOD Project and the Sensor Installation Demonstration in Žilina

The objective of the EnCLOD Project initiative is to use IoT sensor networks and Open Data to support more advanced urban and territorial governance.

The sensors used are designed to be discreet, accurate and resistant to vandalism.

The installation and replacement process follows a series of precise steps:

  • Removal and replacement: the video shows the replacement of an older sensor whose battery had lasted for three years. The surface layer of asphalt is carefully removed to access the existing device.
  • Alignment: once the new sensor, a magnetometer, has been positioned, correct alignment is essential. The arrow marked on the device must be placed in the same direction as the traffic flow.
  • Sealing and protection: the sensor is inserted into its housing and sealed first with a layer of sand and then with asphalt to protect the device. The installation is completed using a hammer, while a magnet allows the new unit to be connected quickly.

Air Quality Monitoring Through the EnCLOD Project

The demonstration continues with the installation of a second type of sensor specifically designed to monitor air quality in the city of Žilina.

  • A smaller sensor is initially attached to a street pole using a drill and metal clamps.
  • A larger device is then installed higher up on the same pole to ensure optimal measurements and data collection.

From traffic flows to air quality, these smart sensors and connected technologies contribute to the development of safer and smarter cities. They provide real-time, open and fully ethical data on climate and mobility.
